In Memorium - Patricia Johnson, Ph.D.
It is with great sadness that I am writing to inform you that Dr. Patricia Johnson, Irlen Clinic Director in Texas, has passed away. Pat was a vibrant, energetic, passionate individual who was a major force in Irlen for over 20 years. This is a tremendous loss for Irlen, her clients, family, and friends. I cannot imagine Irlen without Pat, and the loss touches me deeply on a personal as well as professional level. Pat received her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees from the University of Houston. She was a member of the American Psychological Association and Irlen Association. Pat organized and ran many of the Irlen International Conferences; trained many screeners in school districts in Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana; and has being testing Irlen clients for over 20 years. As Pat was passionate about Irlen and dedicated her life to helping those with Irlen and educating the world about Irlen, her family has asked that remembrances can be made to the Pat Johnson Scholarship Fund for children with Irlen Syndrome by sending a contribution to the nonprofit association Learning Research Association for Irlen (LRA), 5380 E. Village Road, Long Beach, CA 90808 or DONATE ONLINE. Letters of condolence can be sent to the Irlen Institute to be passed on to the family. Our deepest sympathy goes to her husband, children, grandchildren, family members, and those who have been working closely with Pat.

    Irlen Moving Forward in Egypt
Rasha Anwar, Irlen Screener, has been successful in connecting with the biggest charity organization in Egypt that works on nationwide projects. Education is one of their main focus areas. "Readability" is one of their current huge projects to enhance reading ability among students in grades from 4-7 in public schools. Targeted students reach 40,000 students distributed in five governorates. The project's plan to achieve objectives is through setting an integrated program to raise the teachers' skills and build a good technical supervision network in schools and districts. They also plan to apply an evaluation system to test the students' skills of reading and writing before, during, and after the end of the project. The project will continue until the end of the school year 2015/2016; i.e., for more two school years.
During the previous implemented phase, excellent results have been reached except for a group of students with below-expectation improvements, or even no improvements at all, of their reading skills. Rasha is currently preparing a proposal to screen those students for Irlen Syndrome. This is a huge project. If it's done correctly, it will be a turning point for the Irlen Method in Egypt. It would also be an ideal opportunity to conduct scientific research on all these data as more evidence on the viability of Irlen Method and the first research in the Middle East with such a big database.
In addition, she has three large-scale proposals: one for the Ministry of Education and two proposals for two large business institutions with 5000+ employees to enhance their productivity, loyalty, and well-being.

Irlen Heroes - The Empowered Learning Trust
More than 180 people gathered at the Rotorua Convention in New Zealand to celebrate the hard work of individuals striving to better their community. The Empowered Learning Trust was named the Supreme Winner for the tireless work providing an Irlen and vision screening program for Year 4 pupils across rural Rotorua. This is a group of volunteering rural mothers whose vision is to raise awareness of Irlen Syndrome and provide glasses and Irlen Spectral Filters to the children. They have already helped a third of rural children with Irlen Syndrome and according to Trustee Yvonne Hathaway, “It had impacted their education immensely.” The Empowered Learning Trust and their screening program is reaching children and families in rural Rotorua and ensuring they have been best equipped to make the most of educational opportunities. It is an exciting model with a lot of potential to be replicated in other areas of New Zealand. Two of the heroes of the Empowered Learning Trust visited the Irlen Institute, Karen Barker and Kim Shearer. It was a great pleasure to be able to thank them personally.

    Irlen Institute Helping Vets
July 28, 2014 by Kara. This military wife blogs about her husband's new life with Irlen Spectral Filters. “When a person goes to war, it is expected that things will happen. So many of our vets come home with issues in varying forms. The military and VA aren’t always the best about effectively fixing the problems people have. They like to medicate which, in my opinion, just numbs everything. So when something great and wonderful comes along that can truly help, I want to share it with everyone!” http://moreramblingsofamarinewife.com/2014/07/irlen-institute-helping-vets.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=irlen-institute-helping-vets

ADHD Drugs Not Tested for Safety, Efficacy Over Time
Studies supporting the approval of the majority of drugs used to treat attention-eficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children were not designed to demonstrate long-term safety and efficacy of the drugs or detect rare adverse events (AEs), new research shows. Investigators at Boston Children's Hospital in Massachusetts found that the majority of studies carried out by sponsors prior to market approval of their ADHD drug were either too small, too short, or both to extrapolate meaningful clinical gains during longer-term follow-up of children receiving drugs for ADHD. "There is a disconnect between the way these drugs are approved in that they are tested in small numbers of patients over short periods of time vs the way the drugs are used, which is in large numbers of patients for many years," senior author Kenneth Mandl, MD, MPH, professor of pediatrics, Harvard Medical School and the Children's Hospital Informatics Program, told Medscape Medical News. "So this has large implications about the way we think about the safety and efficacy of these drugs. It's also impossible to assess the kind of outcomes [from ADHD trials] that parents and physicians would be most interested in, including the impact these drugs may have on educational performance or cognitive and emotional development." The study was published online July 9 in PLoS One

    Study Compares Autism, Sensory-Processing Disorder
Brain scans of children with autism and sensory-processing disorder indicate key differences in brain connections, according to a study published in journal PLOS ONE. Researchers suggest the findings support the classification of sensory-processing disorder as a separate diagnosis. HealthDay News (7/30)

Physically Fit Young Girls are Less Vulnerable to Depression
Greater levels of physical fitness among girls in sixth grade were associated with reduced odds of having depression in seventh grade, according to a study of more than 400 students from North Texas. Having a history of depressive symptoms was the strongest predictor for depression in girls. The findings were presented at the American Psychological Association meeting. HealthDay News (8/7)

Irlen Miracles: posted on The Irlen Institute's Facebook Timeline
"When we are all out together, we are a walking Irlen commercial! Before Miracle got her glasses, she could not distinguish faces or see depth and describes her vision without them like living in a Picasso painting. Angelica struggled to drive because "the lines were always moving." Now she drives straight as an arrow! The little one was struggling in school, and her glasses changed everything. Plus, that smile you see has been on her face since the day she got her glasses!" - Miracle Harris
