Irlen is Bulletproof! The World of Biohacking
What a fantastic three days we just had at the Bulletproof Conference in Pasadena, California (September 26-28). If you don't know about Bulletproof, you should. Bulletproof is the brainchild of Dave Asprey, a mastermind in utilizing the latest techniques to optimize the potential of both body and mind. This year's conference was a thrilling three days, filled with world-renowned keynote speakers and the latest and greatest technologies and techniques to optimize human mental and physical performance. Helen spoke to the audience full of inspired biohackers on Friday, September 26, to share how Irlen Spectral Filters can eliminate unwanted stress and strain on the brain and allow for optimized brain function and performance. She also filmed another podcast for Bulletproof to be aired at a later date. On top of that, they had a film crew to get interviews with speakers. They will be using some excerpts for television and/or Dave Asprey's upcoming mold documentary.
34 other human performance luminaries took the stage over the course of the weekend, including:

Conference attendees were from all over the world, including Sweden, South Africa, France, and England. We loved spending the weekend with all of these exceptionally brilliant and talented individuals and enjoyed offering over free mini-screenings for Irlen Syndrome in honor of our upcoming Irlen Awareness Week!

Ideas to Promote Irlen Awareness Week
We hope that you plan to join us in this grassroots effort to spread the word about Irlen Syndrome across the globe! You are doing so many wonderful things to promote Irlen during Irlen Awareness Week. The following is what Julie Yepsen, a very new Irlen Diagnostician in Illinois, is doing. Tell us what you are doing to share with others.

"For Irlen Awareness Week, three mothers have planned a special exhibit at each of the five schools in my former school district. They will set up tables with cupcakes for the teachers that have a rainbow of colors for the icing, flyers for the teachers, strips of overlay colors, display boards, etc. I'm helping with the baking for that project.

Additionally, I'll be having a gathering for all my clients who have overlays or filters during Irlen Awareness Week. We will meet in a food court at a local mall. I'm mailing out flyers for invitations and am including a paper for clients to fill out and bring with them to the event. The paper they'll bring will say "My overlays/Irlen Spectral Filters help me _____________________." We'll have display boards, wear the bracelets, etc.

My other plan for Irlen Awareness Week is to do a mass email flyer to the principals in my area. The concept of the mailing will be a notification of when Irlen Awareness Week will be held with the question, "Are You Aware?" Then the flyer will link to the Irlen website with a bit of information included."

Big Plans in Egypt for Irlen Awareness Week
Rasha Anwar, Irlen Screener in Egypt, has five wonderful, exciting, and big events planned for Irlen Awareness:

Day 1: She will hold a local conference under the auspices of a governmental official to gain momentum. The location will be in one of the prestigious places in Cairo inside the campus of the Opera House. A diversified audience will be invited to attend the conference from the fields of education, children, health, disabilities, special education, and child psychology and psychiatry. Invitations will be sent to officials in governmental and nongovernmental institutions, international organizations working in Egypt, embassies, national and international schools, and universities.

Day 2: Schools will participate from turning out lights to presentations and some other activities. A list of schools, whether international, national, private or public schools, are invited to participate.

Day 3: Presentation and activities will be run by the biggest and oldest charity NGO specializing in supporting kids with challenges and learning difficulties.

Day 4: A colorful carnival in the Nile is planned to take place on Day 4. Rowing boats will go in one line with the Irlen Syndrome logo pined on the back of the rowers and hanging on the boats. Also, a big poster will be hung on the mainsail of a sailboat.

Day 5: On Day 5, a quarter marathon is organized with the cooperation of the biggest and oldest running group in Egypt. It will be accompanied with bicycling activity. The trip will be ended at the pyramids plateau where banners will hang and the ending ceremony of the week will take place.

Overseas Clinic Directors Visit the Institute
We are so pleased that Keiko Kumagai, Irlen Clinic Director in Japan, and Australian Irlen Clinic Directors Tony Franklin and Maria De Ionna, spent three days at the Irlen Institute. They were able to participate in testing and screening sessions of many clients with a variety of different problems during the three days. They all agreed that it was a marvelous learning experience that helped them fine-tune their skills and learn new techniques. We extend an invitation to all Irlen Directors and Diagnosticians to visit the Irlen Institute to participate in screening sessions and testing for Irlen Spectral Filters.

    New Irlen Diagnostician
Salisbury Downs, South Australia, Australia -
Emily Healy is a qualified Primary Education Teacher. She has a special interest in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Dyslexia. She became so excited about this discovery that she then investigated her own needs and found that she had Irlen Syndrome too, and "what a difference it has made to the whole family since we all got our Irlen lenses." Emily continues to work as a teacher and is also tutoring children and adults with learning difficulties. She has a desire to educate people of the effects of visual processing and provide solutions in Adelaide and rural South Australia. Emily will be working as an Irlen Diagnostician in the Dyslexia Clinic in Adelaide with Tony Franklin and Maria De Ionna, Regional Directors.

    Switzerland
Fritz Steiner and Hanspeter Michel, Irlen Diagnosticians in Switzerland, have an awesome task when training screeners. People in Switzerland speak many different languages. The screener training courses and manuals must be in Italian, English, German, and French. The last screener training course was a multi-linguistic event with English for two people, German for three, and French for six individuals.

    Irlen On Facebook Is Growing

Technology May Remove Barriers for Dyslexic Students
Preliminary research shows that reading on a smartphone or tablet may benefit students with dyslexia, in part because there are fewer words on the page. Researcher and astrophysicist Matthew Schneps, who also has dyslexia, conducted a study of 100 students with the condition. PBS (9/11)

Comment from Helen Irlen: And they say that dyslexia is only an auditory processing problem! Great study which shows that visual processing is part of the dyslexia puzzle and how the Irlen Method works rather than reducing the amount of print one sees.

Exercise During Recess Linked to Higher Reading and Math Scores
Researchers in Finland found that children who participated in physical activity during recess performed better in reading, and those who participated in organized sports had better math tests than less physically active peers. The effect of exercise on reading skills was more pronounced among boys, according to the study in the journal PLoS One. HealthDay News (9/11)

    Quote of the Day
"My son, who is an Irlen lens wearer, saw a USC neuro-ophthalmologist the other day for a related issue. Here's a direct quote from him: 'You're in good hands with the Irlen Institute.' I was so happy to hear a mainstream ophthalmologist say that."

    Other Irlen Quotes
"If coloured lenses can potentially stop the world seeming fragmented and put an end to nightmare distortions, then the learner with autism who shows signs of visual stress deserves to be screened." ― Adele Devine, Colour Coding for Learners with Autism: A Practical Resource Book

"Teachers should be made aware of visual stress symptoms and the potential difference coloured lights, overlays and lenses could make to a learners perception." ― Adele Devine, Colour Coding for Learners with Autism: A Practical Resource Book
