    New Irlen Diagnosticians
    Florida, USA – Mary Conway
has served her community as a special needs educator for over 20 years. Her experience includes classroom teaching, exceptional education department chair, and the director of learning centers in public, private, and charter schools. As a learning specialist, Mary has worked with students who have faced a variety of academic and behavioral challenges. Her desire to assist both students and adults in becoming more successful led her to become an Irlen Screener last year and now an Irlen Director/Diagnostician. She feels she truly has found another piece of the puzzle through Irlen that not only explains why so many people struggle in both educational and professional settings, but also offers a way to ease their struggles. Mary enjoys all types of water activities, gardening, and travel. Mary is a life-long learner and is “motivated and eager to embark on this new path with the Irlen Institute International.” She will be traveling to Florida on a regular basis to see new clients as well as clients of Ann Bonvallet who no longer travels to Florida to test clients.
Nottingham, England – Alan James Penn
is 46, from London, and married with four Irlen children. Unlike many other Irlen professionals, he does not have an educational or health background but a background in sales and marketing in the IT industry. He was mentored in Irlen by James Billett, a UK-based Irlen Director/Diagnostician, following a very lengthy debilitating period suffering from ME/CFS. Alan discovered that he had Irlen and so did his children. His journey with Irlen has been intensive, leading him to work mainly in London and surrounding areas as a mobile Irlen Screener. The majority of his clients are referred to him by specialist private clinical practices based in London’s Harley Street. Alan is excited about continued success working as an Irlen Director/Diagnostician with these practices seeing severe complex cases. “I hope my work will further increase the profile of Irlen Syndrome benefitting the existing network.

Altruistic Activities May Help Stave Off Depressive Symptoms In Teens
Teens who took more pleasure in participating in pro-social activities were less likely to feel depressed than those who sought risk-taking or self-centered rewards, a study of 15- to 16-year-olds showed. Heightened reward activation in the brain area called the ventral striatum when performing risk-taking activities was associated with greater depressive symptoms over time, researchers wrote in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Bill Would Expand Therapy Coverage for Military Children with Autism
A bipartisan foursome of senators will introduce legislation that would increase access to specialized therapy for military children with autism and other developmental disorders. Under this proposal, Tricare would be required to pay for the therapy as prescribed by a doctor or psychologist with an ABA specialist certified or licensed by their state or a national board. The bill also would establish an account in the Defense Department budget, but outside the defense health budget, specifically for the treatment.

    A New Beginning
“This is the afternoon Sarah Kate received her Irlen Spectral Filters in the mail. She kept saying, “Everything is so clear!!" Her little sister was so happy for and proud of her big sis!! Ava and I were shaking trying to get the package open. Later that night at bedtime, I heard Ava say to her big sister, "You read so great sissy"!! Laughing and excitement and joy...I never knew how much Ava wanted her big sister to read to her. (Ava is in 1st grade and reads at a 3rd-4th grade level.) Three firsts that night:. 1st time reading at bedtime without being asked. 1st time using character voices while reading. E VER. 1st time hiding after bedtime reading under the covers. All I ever wanted for her. Right there.”

    News From Down Under
Karen England, Australian Irlen Regional Director, will be conducting research on Irlen using QEEG brain mapping. She is now having a 5 minute eyes open with Irlen Filters as part of her QEEGs. If she knows a child has Irlen Syndrome before the QEEG, they will do the whole scan with Filters on and take them off for 5 minutes eyes open. “That way we will get a better and more accurate assessment of QEEG evidence to help towards refuting disbelievers.” Karen reports that she is still pursuing the Department of Education to screen 20% of Years 1 and 2 and train at least one teacher, and preferably the school counsellor as well, as screeners and will let us know how things go.

Feds: Charters Must Serve Individuals with Disabilities
The U.S. Department of Education issued a guidance letter outlining charter schools’ legal obligations to individuals with disabilities, regardless of whether the schools receive federal funding. Included in the letter was a reminder that students with disabilities cannot be discriminated against in admissions and disciplinary actions. Also, parents with disabilities must be accommodated, such as with sign-language interpreters or Braille materials, when communicating with the school.

    Home School Educators Conference
The Irlen Institute had an exhibit booth for three days (May 29, 30, 31) at the national CHEA (Christian Home Educators Association) Conference for homeschoolers. The conference was held at the Disneyland Hotel and was very well attended by parents from all over the USA who are homeschooling their children. This is an excellent group as they are looking for resources. It was helpful that two of the speakers were “fans” of the Irlen Method and included information about Irlen in their presentations. As you would expect, the booth was very busy after each of the presentations.

NAEP Data Show Disconnect Between High School, College Readiness
Fewer than 40% of high-school seniors have the math and reading skills needed to be successful in college, according to an analysis released by the National Center for Education Statistics, based on data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. “A lot of times we’re getting kids to graduate by asking less of them, not more of them,” said David Conley, Director of the Center for Educational Policy Research at the University of Oregon.

CDC: Many U.S. Toddlers are given ADHD Medications
The AAP’s recommendations for managing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder do not include diagnosis in children age 3 and younger, but a CDC report released Friday showed that more than 10,000 2- to 3-year-olds are given ADHD drugs. Medications s uch as Ritalin and Adderall can calm children with the disorder, but these drugs carry health risks. “People prescribing to 2-year-olds are just winging it. It is outside the standard of care,” behavioral pediatrician Dr. Lawrence Diller said.

Sandy Riecherds: "Hi, I’m a recent follower on the Irlen Institute...I’m here because at 40 I went back to school as required for my apprentice. I had the worst time there and finally sought help. I was then diagnosed with I got some meds to level me out...although it slows my brain down a bit to think, it doesn't seem to be a miracle I was hoping...more tests later and I have now been diagnosed with Irlen! I’m an avid light hater...and most of my agitation stems from bright lights, on Monday I have a lens fitting session to find the right colors to calm my poor brain down. I’m very hopeful this will alleviate my lifetime of problems...and I also hope I do not have be continued...p.s. you’re never too old to seek help...and improve your quality of life! Leduc, Alberta, Canada"
Jennifer Peters: "My 5yo son just got back from OT. He has SPD as well as Irlen. She's been working with him in his filters and today he forgot them. So she did a little testing. His coordination & accuracy was less than 30% without his lenses, whereas since getting them, he's gone up to 70%."
Nathan Lynch: "This place was AMAZING, they tested my eyes, made a set of glasses I could take home today. After only 30 minutes of wearing them my headaches is almost gone. It went from a 4 this morning to a 1, without meds. A big thank you to Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and the Irlen Institute!"
Tricia Gonzales Mendietta: "My son Tres was diagnosed last year, he is doing so much better with his lenses... He passed both his STAAR TESTS and got Advanced in reading:)"
