    New Irlen Diagnosticians

Veronica Acosta, New Mexico, USA. Veronica resides in Las Cruces, New Mexico, with her two wonderful children. She has been certified as an Irlen Screener for two years and has screened over 150 students/adults. She is a licensed educational diagnostician, teacher, and administrator and has worked in the educational field for 16 years. Her passion for working with students and assisting them to achieve success in school is what brought her to the Irlen Institute. Admittedly, she was skeptical at first; but within the first three screenings she conducted, she became a believer. Veronica states, “I can’t begin to explain the magnitude of how screening for Irlen Syndrome prior to educational evaluations can eliminate so much hardship on individuals. Seeing their eyes light up when I set the correct color for them, witnessing their astonishment after they read fluently for the first time, or getting a giant hug of gratitude from mom is priceless. Thank you to Helen Irlen and all of those associated with making Irlen screening a ‘real’ solution.”

Sheryl Pliskin, LMFT, California, USA. Sheryl lives in the San Francisco Bay Area in California and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Thera pist with a private practice serving both adults and children with chronic illness, trauma, and learning disabilities. As a Clinical Program Director at a foster family agency, Sheryl also supports the foster youth of San Francisco. She has been an Irlen Screener since 2004 and has been working with the community to provide Irlen supports to high risk/underserved populations. She has worn Irlen Spectral Filters since 1994 when a fellow Rutgers student suggested she try on his glasses after she mentioned the overhead projector gave her a headache. The Irlen Spectral Filters made such a positive impact in her life that she aspired to become an Irlen Diagnostician upon receiving her first pair. Sheryl is thrilled to have the opportunity to be an Irlen Diagnostician supporting the San Francisco Bay Area community.

Getting Ready For ISAW In Canada
Adel Francis, Irlen Diagnostician in Canada, writes, “Yesterday, we held our cluster planning meeting for ISAW. A great session with 10 screeners; now to make those plans happen. Our guests included 12 year old Holly who happily wears her life-changing ‘Pink’ Irlen Filters. She had prepared a short power point demo to present to our session. It was excellent. Our second guest was the 92-year-old mother of screener Ana Maria Beaulac from Toronto. Ana Maria, also her mother’s name, was visiting from Mexico. We recently tested her, and now ‘Pink’ Irlen Filters are adding quality to her life. She loves them. We have a photo of these two gals sporting their new ‘Pink’ Irlen Filters. These are the stories that inspire the screeners to reach out.”

New From Irlen Center In Gulf Of Arabia
Mona Kazim, Irlen Diagnostician in UAE, writes that she is very busy with preparation for her new center and very proud to open the first Irlen Al Emarat Center in the Gulf of Arabia. She has spent a lot of time and effort towards creating awareness in a country where Irlen was not known at all. One example of how well all of her media exposure is working happened when she went to one of the governmental departments for paperwork of her center and the receptionist said, “Oh, you’re the glasses specialist, aren’t you?” This was the first time that somebody knew who she was and what she was doing. It is exciting when it’s working.

QUESTION: Is Irlen Syndrome only something you have from childhood or can it develop in later life? I have had CFS for 23 years since the age of 35 and have a lot of problems with light sensitivity, severe fatigue, headaches, poor concentration, sensitivity to patterns, and adrenal fatigue. But I did not have these as a child, other than occasional migraines that developed in adolescence. I am wondering if corrective glasses could help me.
    --Isobel B.

ANSWER: You can inherit Irlen symptoms from head injuries and visual and medical conditions such as CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). The Irlen Method, using individually designed colored glasses which quiet and calm the brain, is equally effective whether you inherit or acquire the symptoms for problems of light sensitivity, reading difficulties, severe fatigue, poor concentration, sensitivity to patterns, and adrenal fatigue.

What Irlen Is All About – Why We Are The Best
I cannot thank you enough for the time and patience you gave us yesterday and for letting me observe the assessment. I was truly amazed, and I learnt more about Anna’s difficulties yesterday than I have in 26 years of consultations, assessments, tests, and examinations. That was because your assessment enabled me to actually see and hear what Irlen lenses can do. Words cannot begin to express how I felt as I watched Anna change as each additional lens brought her confused visual and auditory world back into harmony. I can honestly say that you have done something no other professional has ever done for her …. you have made Anna smile and given her hope for the future. For that, we are forever grateful. Irlen is Helping the Marines
My name is Zachary. I am an active duty Marine who received my Irlen lenses around March or April. About a week ago, someone decided they needed my lenses more than I did and took them. I have already noticed an extreme difference: my headaches, blurry vision, and anxiety have returned even worse than before. I was wondering how I would go about getting my lenses replaced. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Note from the Irlen Institute: We have been testing Marines for a number of years, and the Semper Fi Fund has been funding the testing and their Irlen Spectral Filters. If you want to support our military men and women by donating to a very worthy cause, donate to the Semper Fi Fund. Make sure you mention Irlen so that we can help more of our Marines.

Does Fluorescent Lighting Harm Students with Special Needs?

ADD/ADHD Looks Different in Girls Than in Boys
Most people don’t understand that the way ADD/ADHD presents itself looks incredibly different in girls than it does in boys. While boys typically show symptoms of hyperactivity, being distracted and poor grades, girls tend to show symptoms more similar to depression and anxiety. Current research shows an estimated 4 million women are currently not diagnosed, or close to 75% of all women with ADD/ADHD. Often, women and girls with the disorder tend to be written off as “scatter-brained” and “introverted” simply because they don’t act the way many doctors expect because of the research predominantly showcasing prepubescent boys. In fact, many females start to show their unique symptoms at, or just after, the onset of puberty, likely because of the increase of estrogen in their system. Most women who display their sex’s symptoms of ADHD are often told they are simply character flaws that can be fixed with enough effort, rather than the truth: that these are symptoms of a neurobiological disorder. It’s important to know that this condition and their symptoms are specific to each individual, and that individualized treatment programs be developed for them. Amen Clinics Newsletter

Scratch-and-Sniff Test Beats Imaging in Predicting Cognitive Decline
Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) 2016

TORONTO — A simple, inexpensive odor identification test is better than an MRI measurement of entorhinal cortex thickness in predicting cognitive decline, a new study suggests. However, although the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) used in the study provides useful information, it's not a diagnostic tool by itself, said study investigator Davangere Devanand, MBBS, professor of psychiatry and neurology, Columbia University Medical Center, New York, New York. "Clearly, odor identification impairment is an early sign of Alzheimer's disease and can be used to supplement a diagnostic workup," said Dr Devanand. "The caution I would add is that it's not super specific because it can be affected by so many other things," including having a cold, being a heavy smoker, or having schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease (PD), or Lewy body dementia," he said.

Nineteen percent of white children were diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder by the 10th grade, compared with 10% and 4% of black and Hispanic youths, respectively, according to a study in Pediatrics. The findings also showed that among 10th-graders with the highest ADHD symptom levels, 65% of whites received medications such as Ritalin and Adderall, compared with 36% of blacks and 30% of Hispanics.
