I first became interested in Irlen Syndrome when my daughter was diagnosed at 9 years of age. We knew she was very bright and intelligent but was held back in the resource program as a child with a disability. She was not able to read and yet she was able to get very high marks in Math and Science. It baffled both the School professionals and us for many years. It was painful and heart wrenching to have to watch her struggle and frustrating to know she was not fitting in a regular program. What would the future hold for our daughter?
Irlen Syndrome knowledge changed our lives in such positive ways I believed more people should have access to this “Miracle”. Since then I have studied and trained to be an Irlen Screener with the hope that no other children will struggle as my daughter did.
In case you are wondering how things turned out…..Our daughter started wearing her “Rose colored Glasses” in grade 5 and quickly started reading everything in sight. She moved to a regular program in grade 6. She was on the Honors List in High School and will start College on an athletic Scholarship this fall. As I say… Irlen was a miracle for our family.

I have been a teacher for 11 years and I am now the owner of Sound Connections Centre in Red Deer. Sound Connections is a learning centre that specializes in literacy and language development for children starting from the age of 3 years old and upwards.
We work, using a multi-sensory approach, with children who struggle with literacy and or speech and language, children with learning difficulties, children who have conditions such as ADD/ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental delays and more. I took a keen interest in Irlen Syndrome since I work with children with various learning difficulties and I believe this is the cause of some of the difficulties I see with children coming into my centre. Now we can do even more to help!
